Expansion plans for Swettenham Pier cruise terminal

GEORGE TOWN: The Penang Port Commission (PPC) is planning on an early expansion of the Swettenham Pier International Cruise Terminal to accommodate the expected increase of passengers.
PPC chairman Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek said a record 1.1 million passengers used the terminal last year.
“The PPC has made tourism a key economic area by putting more focus on the cruise industry.
“In this regard, the commission has immediate development plans such as the upgrading of Tanjung City Marina, the expansion of the cruise terminal and increasing the efficiency of services offered to the cruise industry. It would be our key performance indicator,” he said during the PPC dinner at The Northam All Suite Hotel yesterday.
He added that PPC officials were looking into proposals to develop the waterfront especially around the Swettenham Pier.
“This will help us offer better services by turning the pier surroundings into a tourism product,” he said.
Dr Chua, who is MCA president, also said that the container volume at the Penang Port last year was 1.1 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units).
“I believe that it will not be impossible for us to reach the target of 1.2 million TEUs this year.”
He said there was an increase in cargo throughput at 24 million tonnes from Jan to Oct this year compared to the same period last year which recorded 23.9 million tonnes. - The Star
