Contractors sought for RM8bil Penang road projects

GEORGE TOWN: The Penang Government is calling for contractors to participate in a pre-qualification exercise for four major roads and tunnel projects estimated to cost up to RM8bil.
The four proposed projects are the 4.2km Gurney Drive-Lebuhraya Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu bypass, 4.6km Lebuhraya Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu-Bandar Baru Air Itam bypass, 6.5km Penang-Butterworth Tunnel and a 12km road connecting Tanjung Bungah and Teluk Bahang.
State Public Works, Utilities and Transportation Committee chairman Lim Hock Seng said the exercise was to select experienced, reliable and committed companies with sound financial standing to undertake the projects.
“The selected contractors will be allowed to participate in a Request for Proposal (RFP) for the study, designing and implementation of the projects,” he told a press conference in Komtar yesterday.
The deadline for submission for the pre-qualification exercise is Jan 14 while the deadline for the submission of RFPs is June.
“Work on the projects will start some time in 2015.”
Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said contractors were expected to take into account the state's plans to introduce transit corridors, including the Light Rail Transit along the proposed alignment. - The Star
